On Sept 28th a newly renovated Garfield Park court was unveiled in celebration of the enduring legacy of Hoop Dreams, which was released in theatres 30 years ago this fall. The event was attended by stars William Gates and Arthur Agee Jr, who expressed their gratitude and noted the court’s potential to inspire future generations. Agee stated, “This is another dream that became a reality.” Gates expressed his gratitude, “I am overwhelmed by this court, this amazing court, overwhelmed by the people that showed up.”
Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson highlighted the collaborative efforts that made the court possible, including organizations Project Backboard, My Block, My Hood, My City, Project Backboard and Kartemquin and noted that Hoop Dreams continues to inspire, 30 years later.
The unveiling of the Hoop Dreams court signifies more than just a new recreational space. It’s a powerful symbol of hope, resilience, and the enduring impact of a film that captured the hearts of a nation.
