Press has begun to come in for Kartemquin Films’ newest documentary, Joffrey Ballet: The Next Movement, which premiered September 18, on PBS.
The Wall Street Journal has weighed in, with TV critic John Anderson says the film “communicates the joy of bodies in motion.”
“While the preparation of performances, and the creative process generally, is not the stuff of exhilarating TV, it is here. The upshot of “The Next Movement” is that this critic is not a dance junkie, per se. But he could be.”

About the film
Joffrey Ballet: The Next Movement follows five emerging choreographers through the Joffrey’s Winning Works program, which supports new work from underrepresented voices in dance, and the company’s effort to reach new audiences. The film was directed by Cam Be an alum of Kartemquin’s Diverse Voices in Docs (DVID) program, and crewed by Kartemquin associates and fellow DVID alumni. Like Winning Works, DVID is designed to open doors for emerging artists from underrepresented communities.
